Richard T. Avila, age 86, passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness on Thursday, February 12, 2026, with his wife and daughter by his side. He was the beloved husband of Janis (Sykes) Avila.
Richard was born in Taunton, Massachusetts, on May 24, 1939, to the late Victoria (Zylinski) and Thomas Avila. Growing up in Taunton, he developed a deep connection to his community, and dedicated his professional life to serving the city he loved. He was a proud member of the Taunton Fire Department driving Ladder 2 stationed at the Bay St. Fire Station. His commitment to public safety and his fellow citizens was unwavering, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and the community alike.
Beyond his professional service, Richard was known for his zest for life and enjoyment of simple pleasures. He was an avid card player who relished the competition of the game, and he enjoyed trips to the casino as well as the “occasional” scratch ticket! He and Janis were able to travel to many destinations within the US and created many cherished memories.
Deeply involved in various community organizations. He was a proud member of the Portuguese American Civic Club and the Polish American Citizens Club, reflecting his appreciation for his heritage and his commitment to cultural engagement. Additionally, he was a member of the Taunton Lodge of Elks #150, where he further demonstrated his dedication to service and fellowship. One of Richard's most notable contributions was his long-standing service on the Taunton Retirement Board, where he faithfully served for 28 years. His leadership and commitment were instrumental in supporting the community's retired workforce.
In addition to his loving wife Janis, Richard is survived by his daughter Susan, his brother Thomas Avila, sisters Diane McGrath and Connie Pistolese, and several nieces and nephews. Richard was also the brother of the late Dennais Avila.
Services will be private.
